How this calculation works
- Area (sq ft) = length × width
- Tile area (sq ft) = (tile size in inches ÷ 12)²
- Tiles = area ÷ tile area, increased by the wastage allowance
- Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up
Example: A 12 ft × 10 ft room tiled with 24 × 24 inch tiles needs 120 ÷ 4 = 30 tiles, plus 8 percent wastage — 33 tiles, or 9 boxes of four.
Frequently asked questions
How much tile wastage should I allow?
Allow 5 to 10 percent for straight layouts and up to 15 percent for diagonal patterns or rooms with many cuts.
How many 2 × 2 feet tiles are in 100 square feet?
Each 2 × 2 ft tile covers 4 square feet, so 100 square feet needs 25 tiles before wastage.
